Subtractions in Excel can by accomplished by typing the = sign followed by a number or cell reference and a – sign.

To try this out yourself by clicking on the cell in the first row and first column (A1) and typing in the number 9. In the first row of the second column (B1) click on the cell and type the number 5. Click on cell C1 and type =A1-B1 and hit the enter key on your keyboard. Excel will show the number 4.

In Cell C2 click the cell and type =9-5 and hit enter on your keyboard or click the check mark on the formula bar. Excel will once again show the number 4.
